We are pleased to announce that the San Gorgonio Section will be participating in the 2017 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO). The primary goals of this program are to stimulate interest and achievement in chemistry among high school students throughout the United States and to provide recognition of outstanding young students, teachers, and schools.
It is responsibility of the San Gorgonio local section to nominate ten students from our area to take part in the National Chemistry Olympiad exam. This exam is tentatively scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 22, 2017. In order to identify these ten students, we will conduct a local section exam during the week of March 13-18. 2017. Schools who register five or more students may choose to administer the exam on their campus. The exam will also will be available at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday, March 18, 2017 for students who are not able to take the exam at their school. The results of this exam will also be used to select five students who will receive San Gorgonio Section scholarships of up to $1000 that can be used when they enter college.
The twenty students with the highest scores on the national exam will be invited to attend a two-week study camp at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado (June 6-21, 2017) . At the end of the camp, four students will be selected based on a combination of objective and subjective evaluations as the United States team to participate at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand (July 6-15, 2017). A student from your high school could be one of them!
Students who are selected as participants in the U. S. National Chemistry Olympiad and as San Gorgonio Section scholarship winners will be honored at an awards banquet in May, along with their teachers. The student from each participating school who attains the highest score on the local section exam together with his or her teacher will also be honored.
We encourage you to register students from your school in this competition by mailing or emailing the registration form by Friday, March 3, 2017. Thank you for helping us to promote chemistry and chemical education in this country!
